Chadar Ochel (Dining Hall/Kitchen) Project - Day Two

Posted: 8/19/2008

Tuesday was another busy day at camp.  Here's what happened:

-Our maintenance staff continued to remove salvage items from the kitchen and dining rooms.  We are saving some of the wiring, piping and lighting for use around camp.  Other items, such as the stainless steel hoods that were above the cooking lines, will be sold to a scrap metal purveyor.  An interesting side note, when we last remodeled the kitchen in 1980, those hoods and the Ansul fire protection system were fabricated and installed by Wasserstrom Company, of Columbus, Ohio.  The Wasserstrom family is active at Tifereth Israel, a local Conservative synagogue.  Now, nearly 30 years later, Wasserstrom Company will once again be fabricating many of the stainless steel components for the new kitchen.

-We reviewed the plans for the new chadar ochel with our general contractor.  These detailed plans are a result of several years of work and collaboration with our architects, Sarfatty Associates Ltd., of Evanston, Illinois, together with the Ramah Wisconsin Site Plan Committee and our food service professionals.  We have been working since 2005 with George Sarfatty, a Camp Ramah alumnus, to plan and design the new chadar ochel.  George's firm also designed the staff housing that was built for summer 2007, as well as the new Tikvah Vocational (Atzmayim) building.  Their expertise in food service design has been invaluable.  They have been guided by a number of dedicated committee members with experience in this area who assisted in the design and functionality process.
