Spotlight on Kitot (classes)
As part of their formal education, campers participate in two classes every day, Hebrew and Yahadut [Judaic studies]. The classes cover topics ranging from families in the Bible to Conservative Judaism. There are also special options for those who desire them: Ulpan, a Hebrew immersion program, and Beit Midrash, in which students study Gemarah. With dedicated teachers from Israel, the U.S., Argentina, and Canada, everyone is learning a lot this summer!
Sophie C. (Machon Camper): In Beit Midrash this year, we are learning about the troubled and rebellious son, a "Ben Sorrer U'Moreh." It's a small class, and conducted in Hebrew, so we are able to study a lot and decide on how we learn. Whenever we have a special shiur [lesson] on a different topic, it's always about something that has relevancy for our lives.
Josh F. (Sollelim Camper): Learning during the summer is more fun that being in classes during the school year. We learn, but we also play many more games about whatever we're learning.
Rachel R. (Shoafim Camper): In text class, we're learning about families in the Tanach [Bible], particularly the Joseph story. We are learning about different types of families and how members of the family interact with each other. Hebrew class is also fun, and I'm learning more vocabulary than I ever knew!
Aaron S. (Bogrim Camper): I am in the Beit Midrash. In Bogrim and Machon, we have it in place of both Hebrew and text classes. This summer we're learning about troubled children and the different approaches to dealing with them. It's a very interesting subject, with a lot of application to our everyday lives.
Sari G. (Halutzim Camper): I like my text and Hebrew classes. We've been reading stories in Hebrew class and discussing them, and in text class we're learning about the establishment of the State of Israel. It's interesting to hear everyone's different views.
Sheya F. (Bogrim Camper): Hebrew class is where I receive the basis for everyday communication in Israel. I hope to visit there soon!
Danny M. (Machon Camper): This year, Machon had electives for text class. The class I'm in this machzor [session] is about the riots in Crown Heights in 1991. It is fascinating to me how members of different religions or races interact - and the result is not always positive.
