Spolight on Solelim

Sunday night, Solelim hosted a Decades Dance Contest. Each cabin was assigned a decade from which to choose a song and then had the chance to perform a dance routine, complete with costumes, for their eidah. The Te'atron [small theatre] was filled with cheering and laughter as campers watched their peers perform songs like "Greased Lighting" and "Stayin' Alive."

Spotlight on Garinim
Posted: 6/26/2008
Monday night the Garinim gathered at the waterfront to find their Rosh Eidah, Mollie Flink, dressed in a bathrobe. As they listened to their counselors explain that night's peulat erev [evening activity], they learned that she was Pharaoh and their job that evening was to have a sandcastle building competition. The campers giggled excitedly, some of them booing Mollie in her role as Pharaoh, and once they were divided into groups, they got busy building their sandcastles to Mollie's specifications. They had a great time working together to build their castles as the sun set over the lake.

June 25, 2006 marks the two year anniversary of the capture of the Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit. In a showing of solidarity, campers and staff gathered on the kikar on the afternoon of June 24 to sing songs and raise awareness about his capture in the hopes that he and the other captured soldiers will be brought home soon. Led by our Mishlachat members [staff from Israel], voices filled the kikar with songs of peace and hope.

Camp's Public Art
Posted: 6/23/2008
One of the special aspects of the grounds of Camp Ramah is that its buildings are covered with works of art. Everywhere you look, you can see paintings based on Jewish phrases and sayings that were created by campers and staff. The creative mind behind these works of art is Paul Palnik, who has been with Ramah since 1995, when Rabbi Soloff asked him to evaluate the camp's art program and make recommendations on taking it into a new direction. Now, there are approximately 60 paintings that adorn our buildings, adding more beauty to our already beautiful surroundings and acting as inspiration for all who see them.

The First Shabbat
Posted: 6/22/2008
Shabbat at camp is always a special time. There's lots of time to hang out with friends, study, read, relax. Everyone wears nice clothes, and things generally move slower than they do during the rest of the week. The whole camp comes together for Friday evening services and the sound of everyone's voices joining together to welcome Shabbat is an experience that stays with you.

Things really got started today as the campers learned what activities they would do for the first machzor [the first half of the summer] and began going around to their classes and tarbut. The weather had warmed up nicely and many classes could be seen sitting in circles around the kikar.

Shouts of joy rose from the waiting counselors as the buses made the turn off of Buckatabon Road and into camp. Campers old and new exited the buses with huge smiles and quickly found their friends and counselors. Everyone is excited and looking forward to an amazing summer!

Shalom from Camp
Posted: 6/17/2008
The campers aren't even here yet, but Camp Ramah in Wisconsin Summer 2008 is already in full swing. The division heads arrived the first week of June and the majority of the staff arrived June 12. We had a wet start, but the weather soon took a turn for the better and we have spent the last week planning and preparing under beautiful sunny skies. Camp has changed a lot since last summer and the staff is full of new and familiar faces.
